Alan A. Campbell-Swinton was born on October 18, 1863, at Kimmerghame, in Berwickshire, Scotland. After graduating from the Cargilfield Trinity School, he attended Fettes College in Edinburgh from 1878 through 1881, and then spent a post-graduate year touring France.

In June 18, 1908, he published “Distant Electric Vision.” He explained the idea of using Nipkow’s disk to capture the picture and send it, section by section, to the CRT, which uses an electron beam to recreate the image. However in 1908, he said that technology was not advanced enough to make this idea feasible. He died in February 1930 in London.
